Day 17- February 28

In the men's gold medal Ice Hockey game, Canada beat the USA 3-2 in overtime. Canada led 1-0 on a goal by Jonathan Toews in the first period. Canada scored again in the second period on a goal by Corey Perry to make it 2-0. The USA scored a bit later in the period with a goal Ryan Kesler to make it 2-1. The USA scored with 24 seconds left in the third period on a goal by Zach Parise. In overtime the winning goal was scored by Sidney Crosby of Canada to make it 3-2 Canada and win the gold medal for them.

Day 10- February 21 

Bode Miller of the USA wins gold in men's Alpine Skiing Super Combined. Ted Ligety of the USA finished 5th. Croatia's Ivica Kostelic wins the silver while Silvan Zurbriggen of Switzerland wins  bronze. 

In men's Ice Hockey, the USA beat Canada 5-3. 

In men's two man bobsled, the USA team of Steven Holcomb and Curtis Tomasevicz finished in 6th place.

In women's speedskating,  1500m America's Heather Richardson and Jennifer Rodriguez finished 16th and 18th respectively. 

In men's Ski Cross,  Casey Puckett of the USA finished 23rd. 

 In men's Biathlon 15KM Mass Start, American Tim Burke finished 18th. 

In women's Curling Sweden beat the USA 9-3 and earlier in the day Canada beat the USA 9-2.

In men's curling Great Britain beat the USA 3-2. 

In women's Figure Skating Ice Dance, after the first day the USA team of Meryl Davis and and Charlie White are in 2nd place while the other USA team of Tanith Belbin and Benjamin Agosto were in 4th place.

 In women's Figure Skating Ice Dance,  the USA team of Meryl Davis and Charlie White won silver while the other USA team of Tanith Belbin and Benjamin Agosto finished 4th. The Canadian team of Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir won the gold while Oksana Domina and Maxim Shabalin of Russia won the bronze. 

In Men's Curling,  Canada beat the USA 7-2 and later in the day the USA lost to China 11-5. 

The USA beat Sweden 9-1 in women's Ice Hockey. 

The USA men's Ski Jumping team finished 11th.

In men's team Nordic Combined 4 X 5km relay, the USA team of Brett Camerota, Todd Lodwick, Johnny Spillane and Bill Demong wins silver. Austria wins gold while Germany wins bronze. 

After the first day of women's Figure Skating short program,  American Rachel Flatt was 5th and Mirai Nagasu was 6th. Yu-Na Kim of Korea was in first place, Japan's Mao Asada was in 2nd place and Joannie Rochette of Canada was 3rd. 

Switzerland beat the USA in women's Curling 10-3 and earlier in the day the USA lost to China 6-5.

Bode Miller of the USA did not finish the men's Alpine Skiing Giant Slalom. Ted Ligety of the USA finished 9th. Carlo Janka of Switzerland won the gold while Norways's Kjetil Jansrud and Aksel Lund Svindal won silver and bronze respectively. 

In men's 10000m speedskating, Jonathan Kuck of the USA finished 8th. Seung Hoon - Lee of Korea wins  gold, Ivan Skobrev of Russia wins silver and Bob de Jong of the Netherlands wins bronze.

In women's Bobsled,  the USA team of Elana Myers and Erin Pac wins bronze. Bree Shaaf and Emily Azevedo of the USA finished 5th while the USA's Michelle Rzepka and Shauna Rohbock finished 6th. Canada's Kaillie Humphries and Heather Moyse wins gold while Canada's Hele Upperton and Shelly-Ann Brown wins silver.

In women's Short Track Speedskating 3000m relay,  the USA team of USA Katherine Reutter, Alyson Dudek, Kimberly Derrick, Allison Baver and Lana Gehring wins bronze. China wins gold and Canada wins silver. Korea was disqualified for bumping China. 

The USA beat Switzerland 2-0 in men's Ice Hockey.

In women's Freestyle Skiing Aerials,  the USA did not medal. American's Lacy Schoor, Ashley Calwell and Emily Cook finished in 9th, 10th and 11th places respectively. Gold was won by Australia's Lydia Lasilla while Nina Li of China wins silver and Xinxin Guo also of China wins bronze.

In the women's Alpine Skiing Giant Slalom first run,  Lindsey Vonn of the USA crashed into the fence and broke her pinkie. Julia Mancuso also of the USA was waved to start her run with Vonn still on the course. She was flagged and told to start over again. It affected her run and she was in 18th place after the first run. Sarah Schleper of the USA was in 14th place. Elisabeth Goergl of Austria was in 1st place.

In men's Freestyle Skiing men's Aerials, Jeret Peterson of the USA won silver. American Ryan St. Onge finished 4th. Alexei Grishin of Belarus wins gold and Zhongqing Liu of China wins bronze.

In Nordic Combined - Individual Large Hill/10 km CC, the USA took the top 2 spots. Bill Demong wons gold while Johnny Spillane wins silver. Bernhard Gruber of Austria wins bronze.

In women's Ice Hockey,  Canada beat the USA 2-0 to win gold. USA wins a silver medal.

In women's Figure Skating,  no American won a medal. Mirai Nagasu of the USA finished in 4th place while Rachael Flatt also of the USA finished 7th.  Yu-Na Kim of Korea wins gold. The Silver went to Mao Asada of Japan while Joannie Rochette of Canada wins bronze.

In women's Alpine Skiing Giant Slalom,  Julia Mancuso of the USA finshed 8th. Viktoria Rebensburg of Germany wins gold, Tina Maze of Slovenia wins silver while Elisabeth Goergl of Austria wins bronze.

The USA beats Finland 6-1 in men's Ice Hockey to advance to the gold medal game against Canada. 

In men's Short Track Speedskating men's 5000m relay, the USA team of USA Apolo Anton Ohno, Travis Jayner, J.R Celski, Jordan Malone and Simon Cho wins bronze. Olivier Jean, Charles Hamelin, Francois-Louis Tremblay, Guillaume Bastille, and Francois Hamelin of Canada wins gold while the Korean team of Ho-Suk Lee, Yoon-Gy Kwak, Seoung Il Kim, Jung-Su Lee and Si-Bak Sung wins silver.

Katherine Reutter of the USA won silver in the women's Short Track Speedskating 1000m. Meng Wang of China wins gold while Seung-Hi Park of Korea wins bronze. 

In men's 500m Short Track Speedskating,  Apolo Anton Ohno of the USA was disqualified and finished 8th overall after being disqualified in the finals because he allegedly pushed Korean speedskater Si-Bak Sung in the back causing him to fall. Charles Hamelin of Canada wins gold, Si-Bak Sung of Korea wins silver and Francois-Louis Tremblay also of Canada wins bronze. 

In the women's Alpine Skiing Slalom,  American Lindsey Vonn did not finish while Sarah Schleper of the USA finished 16th. Maria Riesch of Germany wins gold. Marlies Schild of Austria wins silver and Sarka Zahrobskam of the Czech Republic wins bronze.

In Snowboard - Men's Parallel Giant Slalom,  American Chris Klug finished 7th. Jasey Jay Anderson of Canada wins gold, Benjamin Karl of Austria wins silver and Mathieu Bozzetto of France wins bronze.

Steven Holcomb, Steve Mesler, Curtis Tomasevicz, and Justin Olsen of the USA wins gold in the men's four man Bobsled. The German team of Kevin Kuske, Andre Lange, Martin Putze and Alexander Roediger wins silver while David Bissett, Lascelles Brown, Chris le Bihan, and Lyndon Rush of Canada wins bronze.

In women's Speedskating Team Pursuit,  the USA team of Catherine Raney, Nancy Swider-Pelz Jr., Jennifer Rodriguez and Jilleanne Rookard finished 4th. Germany wins gold, Japan wins silver and Poland wins bronze.

American Bode Miller did not finish the Men's Alpine Skiing Slalom. Giuliano Razzoli of Italy wins gold, Ivica Kostelic of Croatia wins the silver and Andre Myhrer of Sweden wins bronze.

Japan beat the USA 9-7 in women's curling. 

 Erin Hamlin and Julia Clukey of the USA finished 16th and 17th respectively in the women's Luge singles with Megan Sweeney finishing 22nd. 

 In women's snowboard cross, the USA's Lindsey Jacobellis finished 5th and Faye Gulini finished 12th.

 In women's 500m speedskating Heather Richardson finished 6th. 

 In the men's 12.5k Pursuit biathlon Jeremy Teela of the USA finished 24th.

The USA defeated Norway 6-1 in men's Ice Hockey. 

In men's figure skating, the USA's Evan Lysacek wins gold while Evgeni Plushenko of Russia wins  silver. The bronze went to Daisuke Takahashi of Japan. Johnny Weir of the USA finished 6th. 

The USA did not win a medal in women's 1000m speedskating. Jennifer Rodriguez of the USA finished 7th while Heather Richardson of the USA finished 9th. 

 In women's Alpine Skiing- Super Combined,  Julia Mancuso of the USA won silver. Maria Riesch of Germany won gold while Anja Paerson of Sweden won bronze. Lindsey Vonn of the USA did not finish.

In men's Curling Denmark beat the USA 7-6.

Bode Miller and Andrew Weibrecht of the USA won silver and bronze respectively in men's Alpine Skiing Super G. Aksel Lund Svindal of Norway won gold. 

In women's Figure Skating Ice Dance, the USA team of Meryl Davis and Charlie White were in 3rd place after the compulsory dance. Tanith Belbin and Benjamin Agosto of the USA were in 4th place. The Russian team of Oksana Domnina and Maxim Shabalin were in 1st place followed by Canada's Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir in 2nd place. 

 In women's Curling, the USA beat Russia 6-4. 

 In men's Curling, the USA beat France 4-3.

Day 3 - February 14

Bryon Wilson of the USA won bronze in mens freestyle skiing moguls. Canada's Alexandre Bilodeau won the gold and Australian Dale Begg-Smith won silver.

In the Nordic combined Johnny Spillane of the USA won silver while Jason Lamy Chappuis of France won the gold and Italy's Alessandro Pittin won bronze. Todd Lodwick of the USA finished 4th.

In the Luge mens singles American Tony Benshoof finished 8th. Felix Loch of Germany won gold, David Moeller of Germany won silver and Armin Zoggeler of Italy won bronze.

The USA beat China 12-1 in women's Ice Hockey.

Bode Miller of the USA wins bronze in men's downhill Alpine Skiing. Switzerland's Didier Defago wins gold and Askel Lund Svindal of Norway won silver.

In Pairs Figure Skating the USA team of Amanda Evora and Mark Ladwig finished 10th. China won gold and silver while Germany won bronze.

2010 Vancouver winter Olympics- Opening Ceremony and Day 2

Last night was the opening ceremony for the Vancouver winter games. It was held at BC stadium. The opening ceremony started with a canadian athlete(snowboarder Johnny Lyall) leaping through the olympic rings, then there was the dances of the aboriginal Canadians followed by the parade of nations. There will be 82 countries competing with over 2600 athletes. Its fun to watch how many athletes a country has competing compared to their population. The USA has 304 million people in it with 216 athletes, China had 90 athletes with a 1.3 billion population, Russia had 178 athletes competing with 140 million population.
After the parade of nations a song was sung by Nelly Furtado and Bryan Adams called Bang the Drum. Then there was the cultural section to celebrate the vast geography and people of Canada. There was a polar bear that rose from the floor of the stadium, totem poles rising up from the ground, a song by Sarah McLachlan(Ordinary Miracle), fiddlers dancing tap, a song by Joni Mitchell(Both Sides Now), Snowboarders and skiers going down a mountain and speed skaters circling the area around the mountain. There was narration by actor Donald Sutherland.
KD Lang sang Hallelujah, followed by the carrying of the Olympic flag by eight canadians of all cultures. The Flag carriers were hockey's Bobby Orr, singer Anne Murray, Betty Fox, mother of cancer patient Terry Fox, actor Donald Sutherland, gold medal figure skater Barbara Ann Scott, race car driver Jacques Villeneuve, UNAMIR commander Romeo Dallaire, and Canadian astronaut Julie Payette.
Then there was a moment of silence for the tragic death of a Georgian Luger named Nodar Kumaritashvili who died while in a practice run before the opening ceremony. He flew off the track and onto a steel pole.
Then the Olympic torch was carried into the stadium by Paralympic athlete Rick Hansen who passed it to speedskater Catriona LeMay Doan. She passed it to basketballs Steve Nash. He passed the torch to skier Nancy Greene who then passed the torch to hockey's great one Wayne Gretzky.
All of the athletes waited for the four legs of the cauldron to arise from the floor. Only three legs arose so Gretzky and the others lit the cauldron.
Gretzky also lit the outdoor cauldron as well.


Day 2 - February 13

American Apolo Anton Ohno won the silver medal in the 1500m short track speedskating. Ohno was forth into the final turn when two Korean speed skaters crashed into each other. JR Celski of the USA won the bronze medal. Lee Jung su of Korea won the gold.
Ohno tied American Bonnie Blair for most medals won in an Olympics - six.

Hannah Kearney of the USA won gold in the women's Freestyle Skiing Moguls beating Canadian Jenn Heil. Shannon Bahrke of the USA finished third and won bronze.
