Rio 2016 Predictions

With the Rio 2016 Rio games one week from today I am going to make a few predictions. Lets start with the total medal count.

The USA will win 43 gold, 27 silver and 28 bronze for a total of 98
China will win 36 gold, 29 silver and 27 bronze for a total of 92
Great Britain will win 19 gold, 17 silver and 18 bronze for a total of 54
Germany will win 16 gold, 17 silver and 19 bronze for a total of 52
Russia will win 18 gold, 16 silver and 15 bronze for a total of 49
Brazil will win 10 gold, 11 silver and 5 bronze for a total of 26

Russia has had their entire track and field and weightlifting team banned from the games. Over 100 Russian athletes have been banned from the games. This reflects in the low total of predicted medals won for Russia. Don't be surprised if Russia's total is even lower than the 49 medals won I predicted. A clean Russian team means fewer medals won for Russia in the Rio games. The USA and China lead the pack in medals won with Great Britain and Germany next. Brazil will have a record medal haul of 26 medals won.

USA swimmer Katie Ledecky will win gold in every event she is entered in, Michael Phelps will win 4 gold medals, the USA swim team will win at least 28 total medals. Other USA swimming medalists will be Maya DiRado, Ryan Lochte, Missy Franklin, Elizabeth Beisel, Nathan Adrian and Allison Schmitt.

In Beach Volleyball, the USA will win at least a silver medal on the women's side led by Kerri Walsh Jennings and April Ross. On the men's side. Phil Dalhausser and Nick Lucena will win at least a silver medal. Casey Patterson and Jake Gibb will win bronze for the USA. Brazil's beach volleyball teams, both men's and women's are very good and possible gold medal contenders.

In indoor Volleyball, the USA women's team will win gold over Brazil in 5 sets. The USA men's team will win a bronze medal. Brazil again will be the USA's top rival.

In Track and Field, the USA will win at least 27 total medals. Allyson Felix will win gold in the women's 400, Justin Gatlin will win silver in the men's 100 with a time of 9.79 seconds, Usain Bolt of Jamaica will win gold with a time of 9.76 seconds.
In the men's 200, Usain Bolt of Jamaica will win gold with a time of 19.63 seconds, LaShawn Merritt of the USA will win silver with a time of 19.72 seconds and Justin Gatlin of the USA will win bronze with a time of 19.76 seconds.
Ashton Eaton of the USA will win gold in the decathlon, Tori Bowie of the USA will win gold in the women's 100 with a time of 10.74 seconds. Tori Bowie will also win gold in the women's 200 with a time of 21.78 seconds. The USA will win silver in the men's 4 by 100 relay, but the USA women will win gold in the 4 by 100 relay. The USA 4 by 400 relay teams for men and women will win gold.

The USA will win gold in men's and women's basketball and women's soccer. The USA women's gymnastics team will win gold. Simone Biles will win gold in all around. Simone Biles, Aly Raisman and Gabby Douglas will medal in Individual events. The USA men's gymnastics team will win team bronze.

USA divers Jessica Parrato and David Boudia will medal.

Jordan Burroughs, Adeline Gray, Kim Rhode and Kayla Harrison will also medal for the USA in their respective sports.

20th anniversary of...

Today marks the 20th anniversary of the bombing of Centennial Olympic Park in Atlanta. It happened at 1:20am on July 27, 1996. I was asleep and was awoken by the news by my then girlfriend's family. I watched coverage of the bombing most of the night. Later in the day, 20 years ago, I went to see Track and Field at the Olympic Stadium. Security was so tight. Earlier in the day, ACOG management said the games would continue. We all should remember Alice Hawthorne and her family, and over 100 injured on that fateful day back in 1996.

20 years ago today: USA women's gymnastics..

20 years ago today, July 23, 1996 the USA women's gymnastics team won the gold medal! I was working in the Media Sub Center, which covered all of the sports held at the Georgia Dome and Georgia World Congress Center. I was allowed to "sit in" on this gold medal winning women's gymnastics press conference but did not take a camera in that day, which is my biggest regret. Twenty years later at the Relive the Dream - Atlanta 1996 - 20th anniversary celebration, I got the photos of the gold medal winning Olympic women's gymnastics team I had missed on that day. The magnificent 7, they are called, inspires many to this day!

Olympic updates: Rio 2016

Danell Leyva has now joined the USA men's Olympic gymnastics team after John Orozco tore his ACL. Orozco was named to the USA men's Olympic gymnastics team at the end of June. Leyva was selected originally as an alternate.

Maggie Nichols has retired from elite gymnastics. Injuries have taken a toll on her. She plans to compete at the collegiate level for Oklahoma this fall.

The USA final Olympic roster has 555 Olympians. There are 293 women and 262 men. The 293 women selected to the USA Olympic team is the largest number of women ever selected to a USA team. In London there was 529 USA Olympians on the roster.

NBC has said there will be 6,755 hours streamed and broadcast at Rio Olympic events through all of its affiliates. That beats the 5,535 hours at London 2012. NBC will televise 260.5 hours. NBC's hours will be 10am-5pm, 8pm- midnight, 12:35am-1:35am with replays from 1:35am- 4:30am. The NBC sports network will televise 330 hours. NBCSN will televise from 8am- midnight during the games. USA Network will televise 110.5 hours, CNBC will televise 42 hours, Bravo TV will televise 94.5 hours and MSNBC will televise 78.5 hours. Also NBC has said there will be a one hour delay in televising the opening ceremony.

Today is the 20th anniversary of the 1996 Atlanta Olympics opening ceremony! The games took place from July 19 - August 4, 1996.

The Russian track and field ban has been upheld by the Court of Arbitration for Sport in Lusanne. Russian Track and Field athletes will not compete in Rio. The IOC has decided not to ban Russia from the Rio games in all sports. This decision leaves the decision to ban Russian athletes up to individual sport federations. The final number of Russians allowed to compete in Rio by the IOC is 270 athletes. That means 117 athletes were banned from Rio. Originally Russia's Olympic team was going to send 387 athletes to Rio. The entire Russian track and field and weightlifting teams were banned from Rio. Also several Russian swimmers and rowers were banned as well.

The Australian Olympic team tried to move in to the Olympic Village on July 24 and faced problems with smelling gas, loose wiring and plumbing problems. Some of the rooms have not been completed throughout the Olympic Village and the Rio Organizing Committee is scrambling to get all of the problems fixed by July 28. The Olympic village opened on July 24. Several other Olympic teams like Britain and New Zealand wont move in until the problems are fixed. The USA, Italy and the Netherlands will hire workers to finish their rooms.

USA men's long jumper Marquis Dendy has withdrawn from the Rio games due to a right leg injury. Mike Hartfield will take his place on the USA team.
