Day 17 and Closing Ceremony












The USA men's water polo team beat Hungary 11-8 for bronze. Ben Hallock lead team USA with 2 goals. Serbia wins gold by beating Croatia 13-11 to win gold. Croatia wins silver.

American Kennedy Blades wins silver by losing to Yuka Kagami of Japan 3-1 in women's freestyle wrestling 67kg final. Kagami wins gold. 

The USA women's volleyball team lost to Italy 3-0, 18-25, 20-25, 17-25 to win silver. Italy wins gold. Brazil beat Turkey 3-1 for bronze.

American Jennifer Valente wins gold in the cycling track omnium points race. Daria Pikulik of Poland wins silver and Ally Wollaston of New Zealand wins bronze.

Note: Final medal could change due to FIG error in scoring with Jordan Chiles who upon getting her score on women's floor exercise found the start value to be 1 tenth of a point lower, the USA appealed it and the judges gave her the 1 tenth of a point moving Jordan Chiles from 5th on floor to bronze medal - 3rd, passing Romania's Ana Barbosu who was originally supposed to win bronze. Romania appealed to the Court of Arbitration for Sport where they ruled Jordan Chiles may have to give back her bronze medal because the appeal was 4 seconds late. USA gymnastics have proof the appeal was made within 47 seconds, which is under the 1 minute time limit for raising an appeal. Updates may follow.

The USA women's basketball team hung on to beat France 67-66 to win gold. France wins silver. Australia beat Belgium 85-81 to win bronze.  Halftime score was 25-25 then France scores 10 points in a row in the 3rd quarter to make it 35-25 and the USA came back to erase that deficit. Second half margin for USA was between 1 and 3 points. The USA led 67-64 with 3 seconds left in the game and Gabby Williams of France tried for a 3 but had her foot on the line and banked in 2 points to make the final margin just 1 point and seal the win for Team USA. The USA shot just 34 percent for the game but held France to 32 percent shooting. A'ja Wilson led team USA with 21 points and 13 rebounds. Kelsey Plum and Kahleah Copper each scored 12 points for team USA.

Closing Ceremony:

A mix of high tech and French music highlighted the closing ceremony. It started with legend French swimmer Leon Marchland putting out the hot air balloon torch and taking the flame to Stade Paris. The French National Anthem was played The flag bearers from every nation entered, followed by all the athletes. American swimmer Katie Ledecky and rower Nick Mead were flag bearers. There was a high tech segment where the Olympic rings were raised from the floor of the stadium. Organizers showed the highlights of the games, followed by the French band Phoenix playing 1901. Then the Olympic flag was handed off to Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass Bass handed the Olympic Flag to Simone Biles. Paris 2024 organizer Tony Estanguet spoke followed by IOC President Bach. The French band Her sang the Star Spangled Banner. Tom Cruise appeared at the top of the stadium with "Mission Impossible" theme played and dropped into the stadium. Simone Biles handed Tom Cruise the Olympic flag, then Tom Cruise rode off on a motorcycle with the Olympic Flag flying in the back. The motorcycle took Tom Cruise to a plane to the USA where Tom Cruise skydived out of the plane. Then the Olympic Rings were fastened to the Hollywood sign.  USA sprinter Michael Johnson took the flag and handed it off to USA skateboarder Jagger Eaton people were running with the Olympic Flag. Then in Long Beach, California the California band the Red Hot Chili Peppers were in concert along with Billie Eilish, Snoop Dogg and Dr. Dre. The venue switched from Los Angles to Paris where IOC President Bach declared the games closed. My Way was sung by French Singer Yseult and fireworks went off at the top of the stadium as the closing ceremony ended live at 6;07pm.

An excellent closing ceremony! Looking forward to Los Angeles 2028.

Day 16 - August 10, 2024











The USA women's soccer team wins gold by beating Brazil 1-0. Only goal scored was by Mallory Swanson in the 57th minute. Brazil wins silver. Germany beat Spain 1-0 for bronze.

American Kyle Dake wins bronze by beating Hetik Cabolov of Serbia 10-4 in men's freestyle wrestling 74kg bronze medal match. 

American Shelby McEwen (2.36) wins silver in the men's high jump. Hamish Kerr of New Zealand (2.36) wins gold in a jump off vs Shelby McEwen as they both jumped the same height. The jump off was won by Hamish Kerr. Mutaz Essa Barshim  (2.34) of Qatar wins bronze. 

American Bryce Hoppel finishes 4th in the men's 800 in an American record 1:41.67. 

American Masai Russell (12.33) wins gold in the women's 100 hurdles by .001 of a second over Cyrena Samba-Mayela (12.34) of France who wins silver. Jasmine Camacho Quinn (12.36) of Puerto Rico wins bronze. 

American Grant Fisher (13:15.13) wins bronze in the men's 5000. Jakob Ingebrigtsen (13:13.66) wins gold and Ronald Kwemoi (13:15.04) of Kenya wins silver.

The USA men's 4 by 400 relay team (Olympic record 2:54.43) of Chris Bailey, Vernon Norwood, Bryce Deadmon and Rai Benjamin wins gold. Botswana (2:54.53) wins silver and Great Britain (2:55.83) wins bronze. Great finish to this relay.

The USA women's 4 by 400 relay team (American record 3:15.27) of Shamier Little, Sydney McLaughlin Levrone, Gabby Thomas and Alexis Holmes win gold. The Netherlands (3:19/50) win silver and Great Britain (3:19.72) win bronze. Big lead for USA in the final handoff. 

Victor Montalvo of the USA wins bronze by beating Shigekix of Japan 3-0 in men's Breaking B Boys bronze medal battle 31. Phil Wizard of Canada wins gold by beating Dany Dann of France 3-0, France wins silver.

The USA men's basketball team wins gold by beating France 98-87. The USA led at halftime 49-41. The game was close in the second half and was as close as 3 point lead for team USA but Stephen Curry's flurry of 3's sealed the win for the USA. The USA was led in scoring by Stephen Curry with 24 points. Devin Booker and Kevin Durant each had 15 points for team USA and Lebron James added 14 points. The USA shot 54 percent for the game.  France wins silver. Serbia beat Germany 93-83 to win bronze.

American  Brandon Loschiavo advanced to the men's 10M platform diving semifinal.

American Taliyah Brooks (6.15) scored 896 points in the women's heptathlon long jump. Americans Anna Hall (5.93) scored 828 points and Chari Hawkins (5.90) scored 819 points.

The USA women's 4 by 100 relay team of Quanera Hayes, Shamier Little, Aaliyah Butler and Kaylyn Brown advanced to the final.

The USA men's 4 by 400 relay team of Quincy Wilson, Vernon Norwood, Bryce Deadmon and Chris Bailey advanced to the final.

American Anna Hall (45.99) scores 783 points in the women's heptathlon Javelin throw. Americans Chari Hawkins (44.30) scored 750 points and Taliyah Brooks (38.76) scored 644 points.

American Bryce Hoppel advanced to the men's 800 final.

Grace Stark, Alaysha Johnson and Masai Russell, all of the USA, advanced to the women's 100 hurdles final.

The USA men's water polo team lost to Serbia 10-6 in the semifinals. Marko Vavic scored 2 goals to lead team USA.

The USA men's volleyball team beat Italy to win bronze 3-0, 25-23, 30-28, 26-24. 

The USA women's basketball team beat Australis 85-64 to advance to the gold medal game vs France. The USA led 45-27 at halftime. Breanna Stewart and Jackie Young led the USA in scoring with 16 points and 14 points respectively.

American Spencer Lee wins silver in men's freestyle wrestling 57k final by losing to Rei Higuchi of Japan 4-2. Higuchi wins gold.

American Aaron Brooks wins bronze by beating Javrail Shapiev of Uzbekistan 5-0 in men's freestyle wrestling86k bronze medal match.

American Helen Maroulis beat Hannah Taylor of Canada 4-0 to win bronze in women's freestyle wrestling 57k bronze medal match. 

The USA women's 4 by 100 relay team of Melissa Jefferson, Twanisha Terry, Gabby Thomas and Sha'carri Richardson win gold in 41.78. Great Britain wins silver in 41.85 and Germany wins bronze in 41.97.

American Olivia Reeves wins gold in women's 71k weightlifting. Mari Leivis Sanchez of Columbia wins silver and Angie Paola Palacios Dajomes of Ecuador wins bronze.

American Kristina Teachout wins bronze by beating Jie Song of China 2-0 in women's taekwando bronze medal contest. 

American Anna Hall (2:04/39) scores 1048 points in the women's heptathlon 800 run. Americans Taliyah Brooks (2:13.95) scored 908 points and Chari Hawkins (2:15.76) scored 882 points. Anna Hall finished 5th with 6615 points,  Taliyah Brooks finished 11th with 6258 points and Chari Hawkins finished 21st with 5255 points.

American Rai Benjamin (46.46) wins gold in the men's 400 hurdles. Karsten Warholm of Norway wins silver in 47.06 and Alison dos Santos wins bronze in 47.26.

American Taliyah Brooks (13.00) scored 1124 points in the women's heptathlon 100 hurdles,  Americans Chari Hawkins (13.16) scored 1100 points and Anna Hall ((13.36) scored 1071 points.

Jaida Ross and Raven Saunders, both of the USA, advanced to the women's shot put final.

American Anna Hall (1.89) scored 1093 points in the women's heptathlon high jump. American Taliyah Brooks (1.77) scored 941 points and Chari Hawkins had no mark and scored 0 points.

The USA women's 4 by 100 relay team of Melissa Jefferson, Twanisha Terry, Gabby Thomas and Sha'carri Richardson advanced to the final.

The USA 4 by 100 men's relay team of Christian Coleman, Fred Kerley, Kyree King and Courtney Lindsey advanced to the final.

American Brandon Miller advanced to the men's 800 semifinal from the repechage round.

American Sam Watson wins bronze in the sport climbing speed final. Leonardo Veddriq of Indonesia wins gold and Peng Wu of China wins silver.

The USA women's volleyball team beat Brazil 3-2, 25-23, 18-25, 25-15, 23-25, 15-11. The USA advances to the gold medal match. 

Elle St. Pierre and Nikki Hiltz, both of the USA, advanced to the women's 1500 final.

American Anna Hall (14.11) scored 801 points in the women's heptathlon shot put. Americans Chari Hawkins (13.64) scored 770 points and Taliyah Brooks (13.58) scored 766 points.

The USA women's water polo team lost to Australia 14-13 in the semifinals. Jenna Flynn and Maddie Musselman scored 2 goals each to lead team USA.

Americans Tara Davis Woodhall (7.10) and Jasmine Moore (6.96) wins gold and bronze respectively in the women's long jump. Malaika Mihambo (6.98) of Germany wins silver. 

Kenny Bednarek (19.62) and Noah Lyles (19.70), both of the USA, win silver and bronze respectively in the men's 200. Letsile Tebogo (19.46) of Botswana wins gold.

The USA men's basketball team beat Serbia 95-91 to advance to the finals. The USA was trailing Serbia 54-43 at halftime and was trailing by as much as 17 points in the 3rd quarter but came back in the 4th quarter, outscoring Serbia 32-15 to seal the win. Stephen Curry scored 36 points to lead Team USA. Joel Embiid scored 19 points and Lebron James scored 16 points for team USA.

American Sydney McLaughlin Levrone set a new world record (50.37) in winning gold in the women's 400 hurdles. Anna Cockrell (51.87) of the USA wins silver and Femke Bol (52.15) of the Netherlands wins bronze.

Grant Holloway(12.99) and Daniel Roberts (13.09), both of the USA, win gold and silver respectfully in the men's 110 hurdles. Rasheed Broadbell (13.09) of Jamaica wins bronze.

American Carson Tyler advanced to the men's 3M springboard diving final.

Shelby McEven of the USA advanced to the men's high jump final.

Alaysha Johnson, Masai Russell and Grace Stark, all of the USA, advanced to the women's 100 hurdles semifinal.

Graham Blanks, and Grant Fisher, both of the USA, advanced to the men's 5000 finals.

Hobbs Kessler and Bryce Hoppel, both of the USA, advanced to the men's 800 semifinals.

American Hampton Morris wins bronze in men's 61kg weightlifting

The USA men's volleyball team lost to Poland in the semifinals 3-2, 23-25, 27-25, 25-14, 23-25, 13-15. The USA is eliminated.

American Tom Schaar wins silver (92.23 score) in men's skateboarding park final. Keegan Palmer of Australia  wins gold with a 93.11 score and Augusto Akio of Brazil wins bronze with a 91.85 score.

American Katie Moon (4.85) wins silver in the women's pole vault. Nina Kennedy (4.90) of Australia wins gold and Alysha Newman (4.85) of Canada wins bronze. 

American Sarah Hildebrandt wins gold by defeating Yusneylis Guzman Lopez of Cuba 3-0 in women's freestyle wrestling 50kg final match. 

The USA men's water polo team beat Australia 11-10 in the quarterfinals. Alex Bowen and Hannes Daube each scored 2 goals to lead team USA.

Grant Holloway, Freddie Crittenden and Daniel Roberts, all of the USA, advanced to the men's 110 hurdles final.

The USA cycling women's team pursuit of Jennifer Valente, Lily Williams, Chloe Dygert and Kristen Faulkner win gold in 4:04.306 by beating New Zealand (4:04.927.)

American Salif Mane advanced to the men's triple jump final.

The USA artistic swimming team (914.3421 points) wins silver in the team acrobatic routine. China wins gold with a score of 996.1389 and Spain wins bronze with a score of 900.7319.

Kenny Bednarek, Noah Lyles, and Erriyon Knighton, all of the USA, advanced to the men's 200 final.

American Alexis Holmes advanced to the women's 400 final.

American Quincy Hall (43.40) wins gold in the men's 400 final. Matthew Hudson Smith (43.44) of Great Britain wins silver and Muzala Samukonga (43.74) of Zambia wins bronze. Quincy Hall comes roaring back to win gold.

The USA women's basketball team beat Nigeria 88-74 in the quarterfinals. The USA led at halftime 52-33.  A'ja Wilson scored 20 points and Jackie Young scored 15 points to lead Team USA. The USA advanced to the semifinals.

American Kenneth Rooks (8:06.41) wins silver in the men's 3000 steeplechase. Soufiane El Bakkali of Morocco (8:06.05) wins gold and Abraham  Kibiwot (8:06.47) of Kenya wins bronze. Rooks took the lead halfway through the last lap and El Bakkali passed Rooks in the last 50 meters to win gold.

The USA men's beach volleyball team of Andy Benesh/Miles Partain lost in the quarterfinals to Cherif Younousse/Ahmed Tijan of Qatar 2-0, 14-21, 16, 21. Benesh/Partain are eliminated. All 4 USA beach teams have been eliminated.

USA divers Tyler Carson and Andrew Capobianco advanced to the men's 3M springboard semifinals.

Emily MacKay, Nikki Hiltz and Elle St. Pierre, all of the USA, advanced to the women's 1500 semifinal.

American Freddie Crittenden advanced to the men's 110 hurdles semifinals from the repechage round.

Tara Davis Woodhall, Jasmine Moore and Monae Nichols, all of the USA, advanced to the women's long jump finals

American Kendall Ellis advanced to the women's 400 semifinals from the repechage round.

American Trevor Bassitt advanced to the men's 400 hurdles semifinals from the repechage round.

The USA women's volleyball team beat Poland 3-0, 25-22, 25-14, 25-20. The USA advances to the semifinals.

The USA women's soccer team beat Germany 1-0. Sophia Smith scored the only goal in the 95th minute in extra time. The USA advances to the finals.

Quincy Hall, Chris Bailey and Michael Norman, all of the USA, advanced to the men's 400 final.

American Annette Nneka Echikunwoke (75.48) wins silver in the women's hammer throw. Camryn Rogers (76.97) of Canada wins gold and Jie Zhao (74.27) of China wins bronze.

Jasmine Jones, Sydney McLaughlin Levrone and Anna Cockrell, all of the USA, advanced to the women's 400 hurdles final.

American Amit Elor wins gold by beating Meerim Zhumanazarova of Kyrgyzstan 3-0 in women's freestyle wrestling 68 kg final match. Zhumanazarova wins silver.

The USA women's water polo team beat Hungary 5-4. Maggie Steffens led team USA with 2 goals.

Cole Hocker (Olympic record 3:27.65) and Yared Nuguse,(3:27.80) both of the USA, win gold and  bronze respectively in the men's 1500. Josh Kerr of Great Britain wins silver in 3:27.79.

The USA men's basketball team beat Brazil 122-87 to advance to the semifinals. The USA led 63-36 at halftime. Davin Booker Scored 18 points to lead team USA. Anthony Edwards scored 17 points and Joel Embiid scored 14 points for team USA.

Gabby Thomas (21.83) and Brittany Brown (22.20), both of the USA, win gold and bronze respectively in the women's 200. Julien Alfred of St. Lucia wins silver in 22.08.

The USA women's beach volleyball team of Sara Hughes/Kelly Cheng lost to Tanja Hueberli/Nina Brunner of Switzerland 2-0, 18-21, 19-21, Hughes/Cheng are eliminated.
